My sister, who is a Christian and an professional visual artist, sent me this video this morning called, Perspectives Short Talks: Why We Sometimes Make Bad Art, by film-maker Thomas Torrey. I was a little unsure what to make of the title at first, but decided to give the video a chance. I found it to be an interesting and thought-provoking 15-minute talk that helps us evaluate the call God puts on us as Creatives, while providing guidance to get on track if we’ve deviated from it. If you have 15 minutes, I encourage you to watch it. Then, if you have a few more minutes, ask yourself some questions:
What is your passion in regards to the arts?
Can you discern whether or not you are focused on the right sphere of influence, and are you being true to it? Are your efforts producing good fruit?
Ultimately, are you fulfilling your creative call? If not, how can you make the changes needed to start?
Whether or not you are active in your gifts and talents, please know there is no judgement here. The point of this post is to get us thinking about what we are passionate about and to question if we are expressing them effectively. Are we honouring God with our gifts, and are the results bearing fruit (think of the parable of the talents). What burns in your heart to create? Is it a book, a story, a painting or sculpture, cooking, or something else? If you don’t know, then I encourage you to seek God and ask for His wisdom. Fear not. He has a plan for you.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the video and the questions, if you asked them. Have a great Friday!
